Recession is coming to the UK and its going to be a bad one
Re: Recession is coming to the UK and its going to be a bad one
Ok everyone. The Finns tried it. It doesn't work. Back to the drawing board.
Except that there is no indication that it didn't work.
The government refused to fund the social security department request for increased funding to expand the very limited trial. That to me is an indication that it was worth further investigation.
Increased automation means that it's introduction is imperative. And it will come.

If you want to see an example of how things could be done post Covid have a look at NZ.
https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/world ... plan-84737
Now you'll say well NZ isn't the UK..and it isn't.. It is the same size geographically but a smaller population It also has a sensible and decisive prime minister, who took action quickly to shut down as soon as the first cases of Covid were discovered, has now eliminated Covid from NZ and can get back to normal months before any other country. Furthermore, when deciding on policy it has said it will not place economic growth ahead of happiness.
Incidentally NZ has also acknowledged and apologised for the past with regard to the Maori population.

Same old nonsense.

Isn't that, in a way, what the UK and France are doing at the moment? Admittedly in exceptional circumstances, and the UK would never consider extending it.
Same old nonsense.

Loath that I am to defend some European politicians, because some certainly were not paying attention and certainly were not decisive, NZ did have the advantage of not being a major hub when it came to international travel.lindal1000 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:22 pmIf you want to see an example of how things could be done post Covid have a look at NZ.

I'm also not really sure it can really get "back to normal" that quickly without importing the Virus, and though I know there are plans for Aus/NZ/possibly South Sea Island free travel zone I suspect the NZ Tourist industry certainly won't get back to normal until travel from North America and Europe can resume.

I think NZ are well placed to manage the new normal though. My NZ friends, who normally travel overseas for holidays, are just resigned to spending the next couple of years holidaying in NZ. They started last week with a hiking trip up North.
It must be good because Aaron Banks took off for there to stay in his fortress with his family just as Covid hit. Do you think he knew something we didn't?

Food for thought.
Visit historic Barnard Castle. Lockdown day trips now available.
