Petrol or diesel or ???
I seem to remember the govt saying they were going to equalise petrol and diesel prices. This meant putting up the price of diesel of course which was one of the sparks that ignited the gilets jaunes. Is it still policy? What would you buy now if choosing between petrol and diesel or a hybrid?

Re: Petrol or diesel or ???
I chose diesel as the fuel economy was fantastic but it still had the performance.

Re: Petrol or diesel or ???
Even if diesel and petrol were the same price at the pump I would still buy a diesel. Higher mileage from a diesel, lower maintenance costs, and longer service life because it is basically a lubricant which reduces bore wear. Of course I wouldn't buy a new or late car because of too much unfixable electronics to go wrong.

Diesel of course, the fuel of the future.
Unless I can have a large V-8 which would probably be petrol fuelled.
Or even better, a large turbo V-8 diesel

Diesel on anything 4x4 or medium to large. I am lucky in that SWMBO now knows all about simmering turbos etc - so no premature failures.
For a little run around would probably do petrol as cheaper to buy.

Re: Petrol or diesel or ???
For a run around doing short journeys definitely avoid any EU5 or EU6 diesel as the DPF could become clogged in very short measure at what could be a crippling cost if you have your vehicle maintained by a garage.
I agree with Aardvark regarding electronics, the older the better, my 2002 EU3 VAG diesel TDi was the sweet spot, went from that to a 2006 EU4 TDi which was a mistake in hindsight then was tempted by a very cheap project a 2015 EU5 TDi not knowing I was soon to be without income for 6 months, probably 18 months, its infinitely more complicated but at present because if its youth its quite reliable but has to be used regularly on longer journeys which the confinement made impossible.

Petrol. Made the same choice twice over the past 2 years, on the basis that the cars would be used much less than before.
Loved the Avensis diesel (T180) and would have had another (diesel or T180) had the mileage justified it.

Same old nonsense.
Re: Petrol or diesel or ???
Not surprisingly, I have always been a diesel fan, my own first ( as opposed to someone else's I was driving) was the Perkins P6 in my 1939 Packard, bought in the 60s.
But isn't the best thing for the future an electric power plant recharged when required by short running on a small petrol engine. Heard about it somewhere, perhaps already in use?
