I agree with Simonflys. We paid full tax d'habitation when we only used our house here as a holiday home. Once we moved here and made a tax return (which had the date we moved to France on it), that year's tax d'habitation bill was changed to show us both resident and our RFR and number of tax parts was shown on it and we got the reduction. Nice surprise at the time.

I get the discount on two houses (on the same property) because they're both only used by my family. If I let anyone else live in the now empty one (rent a room to a student, for instance, as well as let the whole house) then I have to let the tax office know that it's no longer part of my principal home and I'll lose the discount and will need to sort out who pays what between me and the tenant (and empty it of furniture if a tenant moves out before 1st January, just like the other house I own which isn't on the same property).
