Most fasinating wildlife creature you found in France

Post by TriciaF »

I think mine was what I called the 'beeping frog' at the time.
We often heard this beeping sound like an electronic device which was waiting to be disconnected.
Then we found the culprit - the midwife toad:

I once found a few of them hiding under some soil and grass next to our terrace.

Glow worms. I'd never seen them before or since. I was closing an upstairs shutter and I saw a cluster of bright green lights in the drying area of the garden. I was convinced radioactive particles had fallen out of one these low flying jets. I don't mind telling you, I shit myself but luckily, in the morning, I recognised it as my own. Sorry Mangetout, I cannae help myself sometimes and I'm praying you see the funny side.
PS up to low flying jets was true.

Tree frogs and praying mantis were the least expected I think, but those large brilliantly coloured lizards are truly spectacular! I love to see the Grues too, especially when they're heading Northeast! :good:

What fascinates me a lot is the nocturnal raptors.
Barn owls (*) lodge under the edges of our roof and in a neighboring dovecote. What impresses me is the complete absence of noise when they fly (very different from other birds that go 'flap-flap-flap')

(*) 'Chouette Effraie' or 'Dame Blanche'
You learn from your mistakes but it's much quicker and cheaper to learn from the mistakes of other people ! :D

+1 for glow worms from me too.
Our collie used to like to go for a walk after dark, and a few times I saw one in the grass at the side of the lane, near a ditch. That was in our early days, then they seemed to disappear.
Another one was bats. In the winter they hibernated behind the shutters which had been left open. At first I thought they were leather gloves, later found the truth.
In spring and summer they put on a display in the evenings, swooping about to catch insects.

+1 for glow worms here too. Plus black and yellow salamander, bright green tree frog, furry dormice and stately stick insects.
Less uncommon, I suppose, grass snakes, adders, and huge bright green lizards.

No "e", Jo!
I quite agree; they were so cute, with their furry tails and go-fast body stripes.

I think I know the creature you mean - never knew its name.
Once we had some visitors who were very hygeine - conscious. He was worried and checked the kitchen cupboards and found some droppings high up (he was tall.)
We calmed him down.
But after they'd gone a cute little creature appeared in the kitchen, sitting calmly next to the bin, looking at me with huge brown eyes. What could I do?
I don't think this was a loire btw, never decided what it was.
