Snakes in lakes.

Post by After the Storm »

We sat by the lake tonight, I mentioned to Mysty that there was a snake in the water swimming towards us. Clearly for him, I was far too calm in saying this to him as he thought I was joking :P. When he realised I wasn’t, he sounded kind of concerned when he asked if we should move, I said only if we see the grass move in front of us  . So what kind did we see?

Could be one of several but the most likely is a grass snake.

I didn't know snales could swim. Why would they? How close to you was it, and did it come out of the water?

If it looks at you appealingly with big round eyes then you can treat it like a cuddly puppy, or calf or anything else with sweet round eyes....

If it gives you a vertical slitty eyed look, then time to go home....

Lots of snakes swim, maybe even all of them.

I double checked it was a snake and yes they can swim. No idea if it came out, long grass and we did not hang about. Nearly broke the speed record running home shouting mummy mummy.

We did actually sit for about ten minutes after I lost sight of it when it got to the long grass at the water’s edge. How close was it? The edge of the water was about a metre and half from where we were sitting. As to why it was swimming... because it was a warm evening...? :P
