Laptop screen

Post by OTBC »

Today, a thin red line has appeared on my laptop screen, about half way down.

Mainly visible when pictures are on the screen. eg, any picture that is on online newspapers etc.

I asume the screen can't be fixed?

HP laptop, 4 years old.

You could connect an external monitor to confirm that it actually is a fault with the screen. Then, if you're brave enough, you could have a go at replacing it yourself.

Thanks for that Tom.

Unfortunately, working away from home at the mo, in digs!

Back home in France in three weeks time.

I'll try that.

Thank you

Sometimes this can happen if your laptop has been jolted or banged.
Tom's idea of plugging in a monitor is good but, as you are not at home, of the responses I found this seems the most helpful in your situation :

HP laptops and Compaqs (the same) frequently suffer from the screen ribbon cable getting fractured cores giving intermittent or permanent screen problems that often start like yours and get worse as it progresses, I am on my 3rd screen cable.

Easy and cheap to replace but daunting the first time, Youtube is your friend.

Thanks, all of you.

Good information.

It's just one tiny line accross the screen, only on video/tv.

For example, as I type this, there is no "line".

It will piss me off I'm sure when I'm watching tv this evening, but hey ho, there's worst things in life!

BTW, anyone who wants all the "free" UK channels live, I use 'transponder.tv'

They give a 'free' trial.

It's 52 quid a year, includes use of the bbc red button, plus has a record option.

As a "connie" always away from home (France, but like UK tv sometimes) it's good!

Don't shoot the messenger. Grip the monitor and press each end of the line with your thumbs. If the line disappears and returns when pressure is released, it's an indication of where the fault lies. If it doesn't reappear it's an indication of where the fault lay, ie, it's fixed. If the line doesn't disappear, sorry, but it's only a few seconds out your life.
