So from what has been said, and correct me if I am wrong please:

Its not free.

Nobody knows yet whether an IDP will be needed to drive in France.

Dominic will denounce me if I exchange my license either now or when I apply for a French one at 70 :D

Another little gem from the potpourri of obscure DVLA license rules and regulations is that you can drive abroad using a valid paper-only licence
only if it is issued before 31 March 2000.

All I’ve done is point out the facts. I’d presumed that you would keep your current licence until you are 70. As it stands you have no need to change it and, in fact, if you tried to swap it for a permis through Ants your application would be rejected anyway as you have a valid UK licence that is not about to expire.

Anyone know the significance of 31 March 2000? Photo card licences were introduced in 1998 after which, presumably, no more paper licences were issued.

31st March 2000 was the last date that paper licences were issued on an exceptional basis.
So it's very unlikely that there are any issued after that date

Thank you for the link which I failed to find. I assumed it would something like that.

Has anyone any thoughts on the topic?
I find my UK photocard licence useful when having to collect undelivered mail from my local UK sorting office.
