Albmf  weakens any argument when you have to resort to insults, you should know that by now.

I am aware of what is discussed in your article, doubt that will be a surprise to others. With it comes a reality assessment of what one can actually achieve which is rather the point of the last paragraph of the article and one that is what everyone should get behind.

“Reducing the environmental impact of smartphone use requires manufacturers to increase product lifetimes, make recycling more straightforward and be open about where they source their metals and the environmental impact. Around the world mining companies have made huge strides in practising more sustainable mining. But we as consumers also need to consider smartphones as less of a throwaway item and more of a precious resource that carries an enormous environmental burden.”

Btw, I don’t have a smart phone, one is good enough for the two of us, have no need of a second one, no pretence in my convictions and I can live with mine.

Ummm....where have insulted ?

You are tying yourself up in knots again :D

We don't live our lives like others do in there throw away society. We buy stuff and make it last.

I stand by my point, smartphones don't really do anything smart.

They are killing the planet.

And you are worried about Brexit.

Everyone seems excited about something called 4g. What is it? And will my life be made complete by having it?
Its the latest iteration of mobile broadband. Each new generation gives faster data transfer. This is a screenshot of my 4g speed:

The next generation (5g) will be up to 10 times faster.

If, like us, your rural fixed line broadband is dire you can use the 4g signal on the smartphone as a hot-spot to which other devices can be connected. That means you can use your phone as a WiFi router when you need extra speed, for example to stream high def TV.
Thanks for the explanation. So its just another (faster) mobile network setup. Since there is no network coverage within walking distance of here it is of no interest. The ADSL speed here via good old steam powered copper is around 8 meg. Before I changed to Orange, SFR was throttled down to just over half a meg but that was OK. Just fast enough to stream a movie, etc.

Dominic, what site do you use to test your speeds, from which you gave us the screenshots?

I knew it was one of the two of you and hesitated but couldn't be arsed to go back to check - sorry.
