I'd not noticed until now that the answer is almost written in the straight part of the clue.

The correct constant, but the wrong answer, unfortunately. I think it's very straightforward, but then I know the answer.

A constant used regularly in cryptic clues and a word meaning 'value' will give you the answer.

I thought of pirate at first but couldn't make the appropriate work either as an adjective or verb.
