D'oh! Head-scratching, net-searching, and nit-picking got me nowhere, so I cheated.
Regis (Sussex resort) + try (attempt) = registry, a list.

For a wrong answer that's a good 'un, Ally, as you say. No, treiziste is right with 'leader', the first place is the lead, queen's ER, and the leader's the head.
