I could see the lank bit, but not the bet. The clue led me to think it was 'but' around lank which clearly made no sense. Please shed a light ..............

A'yankee' is a type of bet; from Wiktionary: A wager on four selections, consisting of 11 separate bets: six doubles, four trebles and a fourfold accumulator. A minimum two selections must win to gain a return.

A a yankee is one of the most popular bets on horses along with round robin, patent, placepot, accumulator and many more.
