It's the 'they' which is heartless, Flaneur. The other words before 'accident' (the anagram indicator) are whole. Now you've been spoon-fed, time to sort out the answer. :innocent:

I started trying to make anagrams of 'system', then realised that 'brainy' had 6 letters as well.

For example, can result from working in certain fashion (9)
