I read Mike's link which says... "L'emploi du feu ou d'explosifs est formellement interdit pour le ramonage des conduits."
 Guess that rules out using a 12 bore shotgun to clean your chimney.

Dunno about laws or Mayoral decrees but I regularly use a Poudre de Ramanage.
I sweep the liners from our 2 woodies once only per year & use the powder all heating season when you can hear the soot & whatever falling down the chimney with the expansion & contraction of the liner. I never leave the fire 'in' all night as low temperatures cause the build up of tar etc.
Every few weeks I remove the cap on the base of the liners to remove any fallen soot & have a look up the liner to check how dirty they are.
The lounge fire is the most used running about 12 hours/day this winter & has shown absolutely no need for an intermediate sweep.

I have read and reread this thread from beginning to end as I am interested how often we should have our chimney swept. I think I have understood it now but perhaps one of the experts could tell me if this is correct.

The chimney must legally be swept twice a year as the law says it must be swept once, unless the mayor says otherwise or you lived in Paris in 1979.
Open fires are better than chimney fires in older house.
Your insurance won't pay out if your chimney catches fire if you drive an illegal UK car.
You mustn't burn pine unless you want to.
Small children can be used for cleaning chimneys but not explosives or unregistered chimney sweeps.

Thanks for the fun guys. :D

That's about right. :D

Should we now we start a 'how to rewire your french house with no electrical experience' type thread. They are more fun. 8-)

P.S Open fires are better :P
