I thought perhaps it wasn't so much the palindromic bit but the upside down bit that someone mentioned. So I tried copying ESSOOIL and ShELL on paper and turning those upside down and still drew a blank .............

It's a bit long winded. The idea of the OP was that you turn the date in the OP upside and you could still read the same date. The font used in the picture in th OP was like a late 1970s/early 80s calculator. In the late 70s on a calculator you used to play around typing numbers in and seeing what words you created when you turned the numbers upside down. A favourite was 7100553 which upside down was ESSOOIL. Sorry it's not very exciting, or if you didn't see the joke straightaway even funny
