I will stick with what I said earlier, that you will have large stones knitting the walls together.
It looks like soft stone and not granite so it could be cut.
Ask a builder around to give you an idea on costs.
You do not want to be pulling out corner stones.

I was looking at the possibility of cutting the cornerstones back a bit but not sure how far back is safe enough.

I have had a couple of builders round some 3 or 4 years ago. One said yes no problem, the other said not possible!
When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.

Yours is quite a way away from the chimney and isn't near a corner which, as mysty says, could be a problem regarding the cornerstones.

I think having an architect look at it to see whether it is feasible or not might be a good idea. Will send you a pm in a minute.
