Where to get silver steel and what is it called in France?

Post by Fitter »

Silver steel - anyone who has been in engineering will know it. Good tool steel, hardens well, accurate ground to size, used for small tools and parts, dowels, pins etc, Walk into any engineering supplier in the UK and they will have it in 13 " lengths.
I've been surviving on odd ends of it dredged from the bottom of my tool cabinets but now running short.
But what the hell is it called in France? Tried "acier argent" - obviously - blank looks- mad englishman etc.
Tried the catchy DIN spec equivalent DIN 1.2210 / 115CrV3 - same result.
Anybody?

You can get all that kind of stuff from Bearing Boys, not sure of delivery charges to France. I have no idea what the french call it. From my experience, the French have a very limited engineering vocabulary.

Acier haut carbone?
All orders were now issued through Squealer or one of the other pigs. Napoleon himself was not seen in public as often as once in a fortnight.

Limited engineering vocabulary in the country of the Eiffel Tower and Ariane rockets? I doubt it. As a French equivalent for tool steel the website of Thyssenkrupp mentions: aciers pour la mécanique and aciers pour outillages. Their product catalogue in French together with the English version will probably guide you in the right direction.

Think French!

If a French person came across Silver steel and wanted to know what it was, what and where would they ask?

When you can answer that then google.fr is your friend :good:

Quel est cet acier?

Le Silver Steel fait partie des aciers au carbone.

Il prend très bien la trempe, qui le rend très dur, mais comme les aciers au carbone il devrait être sensible à l'oxydation, or Vapomill précise que son acier y est très peu sensible.

Par contre il est dit qu'il prend un beau poli à l'usinage, ce qui le dispense de polissage ultérieur et cela colle avec ce que dit Vapomill.

Sounds like it may be commercialised under the name Vapormill.

Yeah - thanks I have dozens of suppliers in the UK.
I had a bearing boys depot around the corner from my workshop in UK, they were ok.
- just getting a bit fed up with the shipping costs so thought I would look for french suppliers.

Well you might as well find a French supplier now, as post Brexit sending things from UK will be more of a hassle. Remember those customs forms...

And that's a well known English brand - Stubs Sheffield https://www.parkersteel.co.uk/EngProduct/0418099/Stubs
