New French mots what I have learnt today

Post by FrenchForumSurvivor » Tue May 14, 2019 9:17 pm

Thanks to the French version of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" ("Qui veut gagner des millions") and my wife, I now know what "un trou normand" is (in colloquial French, not gutter French for those with dirty minds!)

Isn't a 'un trou' any liqueur drink?

When I worked on the Île d'Oléron my Rochelais patron made his trou Charentais with cognac. I preferred le trou Gascon with armagnac.

Just to be sure we are talking about the same things, a trou Normand for me would be a sorbet with calva on it eaten between courses.

I was just about to post something to that effect, curtis, as that's the explanation that was given. According to Robert Collins dictionary, it's a "glass of spirits, often Calvados, drunk between courses of a meal".

Apart from "trou normand", there are also "trou de balle/trou du cul", which can be applied to people as well as places.

Another new word is "tracas";worry, as in "Je n’ai pas un caractère à me faire du tracas." - I’m not a worrier. ⧫ I’m not one to worry about things.(Collins Dictionary online.)
