"Est-ce que" is difficult for native English speakers because there is no literal translation...
"is it that...(whatever)...?" makes perfect sense in english to me.

"Is it that I can help you with that?" makes perfect sense to me now but thats because I no longer make any sense when I speak in English

2 days ago I was asked what the english word for volaille was, I did not know :( decided there probably was not one, then came up with fowl as the closest translation, 36 hours later while driving home the word poultry sprung into my head.

People wont spend 10 seconds listening to my utterings let alone 36 hours

By tomorrow that volaille word will probably be forgotten, what was it again? - fowl? :?

Est-ce que is what I remember from school days. It avoids the problem of guessing the form of the verb 'puis je.'
