That was probably the active ingredient in the old Bat-Aid tablets.
When was the last time you had a battery that you could actually top up Tom? A long time ago I would wager.
They have been sealed for life for a long time but up to a few years ago if you peeled the label off the top you could access the cell caps, not been able to do that with any of mine for 7 years or so.

A couple of the batteries I’ve bought in the last couple of years have arrived dry with the acid in a separate box. After adding the acid and the plugs it’s easy to remove the plugs again if you wanted to.

Re: Replacement battery for tractor mower.
That is pretty much the best way to add life to any lead acid battery. When left doing nothing they lose a few % of their charge each month and once below that magic number their life is shortened.elsie wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2019 4:04 pmMust be the time for batteries to die. Mine has just about gone after seven years. But I've kept it going this autumn by recharging it each before use. It then has enough charge to start the mower a few times.
I'm going to wait until I need the mower again next spring before buying a new battery. I don't see the point of keeping a new battery for the next four months or so without use. If I did buy one I think I'd still need to put it on trickle-charge occasionally?

Re: Replacement battery for tractor mower.
I ordered the replacement battery online from Batterie Megastore at 8pm last Thursday, 28 November and it was delivered this morning around 09.30. Well impressed, especially as our house is notoriously difficult to find. Thanks again to those who replied with info re suppliers.

Oh bugger, I got that wrong. After charging it, I fitted the new battery, turned the key and got the same result as before - zilch - just a click, but the engine wouldn't turn over. I guess that means the problem is the starter motor, isn't it? I dimly remember years ago when my dad had a similar problem with his car he tapped the starter motor with a hammer to free it up. Unfortunately I can't remember if it worked, but I'll give it a go. If anybody can suggest another solution I'd love to hear from you.

"I guess that means the problem is the starter motor, isn't it?"
Not necessarily. You need to check that all the battery cable terminals are clean and tight, including the earth cable to the chassis, engine block and/or starter motor body first. By clean I mean bright metal to bright metal with a smear of vaseline or grease and the nut's/bolts are tight.
This includes the mounting bolts for the starter motor if the motor earths through the body of the starter.
If it still doesn't crank over and still "groans" after trying to start, feel all the crimped on starter cable terminals straight away, do any one of them feel warm or hot? If so that could be problem, corrosion inside the crimp, cut back and recrimp/solder required.

Re: Replacement battery for tractor mower.
The click will be the solenoid, try shorting out the large terminals with a spanner or sturdy screwdriver, if it cranks then remove and clean the solenoid terminals and the cable lugs, if it still clicks then replace the solenoid.
