How to dispose of a steel gas bottle.

Post by Crazy Diamond » Wed Dec 05, 2018 6:42 pm

Can anybody please advise re the above? We've been using the far more convenient plastic bottles for years, so now have a couple of empty steel gas bottles I no longer want and would like to get rid of them. I understand you can't leave them at the déchetterie, so where can they safely and legally be disposed of? I have seen a few dumped up at our local Intermarché (unmanned) self service gas disposal thingy, the one where you buy gas bottles using a credit card, but somehow think that's not allowed.

I think authorised dealers are obliged to take them to prevent their illegal disposal.

I made a wind chime gong for the garden and a barbie out of mine.

If you still have a receipt from when you purchased it, you can get your money back from any supplier. I did that with one I paid for in francs in the 1990s and got euros back about ten years ago.

There used to be lots floating around canals in England when I was a canoeist. I friend collected a couple and, after a bit of work with an angle-grinder made two chimeneas/heaters/barbecues for his garden.

I never knew that Elsie, does it have to be a supplier of that particular gas/bottle?

I was royally shafted for mine but very green and cold at the time, I think the consign was €80 or more on a tall traveller type cylinder, the place I bought it from burnt to the ground last year, rumours of an insurance job, its remote and no-one reported the fire until it was too late, all the gas cylinders exploded and I heard them but thought it yet more feu d'artifice!!!

I suspect the supplier needs to sell that brand (so the bottle gets back to the correct depot). The bigger bottle suppliers around here stock several different brands so it shouldn't be a problem finding one locally (or a quick internet search).

No worries, mate. You'd have to send her round for me to get proper measurements. 8-)
